Why can T-bone crashes be so dangerous?

Any type of collision between two vehicles can be dangerous, but T-bone collisions can be especially serious for everyone involved. This type of crash is where one vehicle hits the side of another, forming a T-shape.

They frequently occur at intersections, as that is where two vehicles are most likely to be traveling at ninety degrees to each other. So why is it that they can cause such serious injuries, especially for those in the vehicle hit from the side?

Closer to the impact and less protection

When two vehicles hit each other head-on or one runs into the back of the other, there is usually a lot of distance between the point of impact and the passengers. Most newer models are designed to protect against hits from the front or behind. The front and rear of the car are designed to crumple to absorb much of the impact. You almost certainly have front airbags, too, and your seat belts are designed to stop you from flying forward or backward.

When the impact comes from the side, however, you are much closer to the point of impact. Your relatively thin door may be all there is between you and the front of the vehicle that hits you. If you are lucky, you might have side airbags too. Your seat belt also cannot stop you from being thrown left or right, as well as it can stop you from being moved forward or backward.

T-bone collisions can require considerable compensation and skilled research and arguments to attribute fault correctly. Experienced legal guidance can be invaluable.
