What are the causes of rear-end auto collisions?

Rear-end car collisions stand out as some of the most prevalent and preventable accidents that occur. When one vehicle smashes into another from behind, there is always the potential for personal harm.

Various behaviors, circumstances and mechanical factors are collectively responsible for these frightening incidents. Understanding what leads to such a mishap is the first step toward reducing their frequency.

Distracted driving

Taking one’s eyes off the road is a leading cause of rear-enders. When drivers divert their attention from the road, say to their phones or in-vehicle entertainment systems, they risk missing what is happening around them. This momentary lapse in focus can result in delayed braking that ends in disaster. Approximately 20% of injuries from car collisions are partially or entirely due to inattentive driving.

Tailgating

Following too closely is a dangerous habit that vastly increases the likelihood of smashups. When drivers fail to maintain a safe following distance, they leave minimal time to react should the vehicle in front slow down or come to a sudden stop. This lack of buffer zone is particularly hazardous, especially in heavy traffic.

Poor weather conditions

Rain, snow and fog reduce visibility and compromise road traction. Environmental situations such as these make responding quickly to sudden maneuvers from others more challenging.

Malfunctioning brake lights

When brake lights fail to function, a driver may be unaware that the car ahead is decelerating or stopping. Without this visual cue, the odds of a rear-end collision rise. Responsible commuters periodically check that this aspect of their rides is working.

Rear-end crashes are entirely avoidable and can put innocent commuters in the hospital. Heightened awareness, adherence to proper following distances and caution in the face of adversity are habits every driver should develop.
