Sometimes the most dangerous thing about your workplace has nothing to do with machinery or hazards.

According to Common Dreams, the newest safety risk in the workplace is the nature of the current job market and the expectations put on workers. The push to work faster and harder while pushing out products and services that are the best is leading to a serious problem with stress that is quickly becoming a leading risk to workplace safety.

Working faster and longer

When your employer starts to demand that you accomplish more in less time, it can be quite frustrating. This type of pressure can lead you to feel overwhelmed. It can make you cut corners to accomplish your goals.

Add to this that employers are increasing work hours and expecting you to put in more time on the clock and you get a serious situation where stress becomes the new normal. When you are under such extreme pressure, it will impact your health. It will cause you to get sick more often and increase your chances of accidents. It can also lead to mental illness.

Pushing higher quality

As if it is not enough that employers want you to work faster and longer, there is also a move towards increasing expectations. They want you to do better than anyone else. The impossibly high standards are difficult to reach when you have more time and can focus fully on what you are doing, but when you are also under time constraints, it becomes almost impossible.

The competition in the market is at an all-time high, so employers want to push you to help them become the best. However, if they do not provide you with the right work environment, you simply cannot make it happen. If you try to do it, you will soon burn out.
