Auto accidents caused by distraction: Is it getting worse?

A driver's sole responsibility is to keep the focus on the task at hand. Drivers who are distracted are significantly more likely to be in auto accidents that leave others injured or killed. Mostly because of phones and technology, such as in-car features, distracted driving is one of the biggest safety concerns on Delaware roads and across the country.

Cellphones are the main source of distracted driving, primarily because of texting. As a result, most states have laws that prohibit texting and driving, and some even have laws that prohibit holding a phone for any reason while operating a vehicle. Despite these laws, statistics indicate that around 3,000 people die in distraction-related accidents each year, but those numbers don't reflect minor injuries, catastrophic injuries or even close calls.

Thanks to new ways to collect data, it is now easier to track the way people behave while behind the wheel. Safe driving programs, a general public awareness of the dangers of distraction and perhaps even new laws all seem to have all contributed to a leveling off of distracted driving numbers. This does not mean that there is no longer a risk or a problem, but it does appear that people may be making smarter choices while driving.

Anyone who is the victim of a distracted driver has legal options. Those hurt in auto accidents caused by other Delaware drivers have the right to seek compensation for their pain and suffering and other documented monetary damages through a personal injury claim. Each driver is responsible for putting distractions to the side while they are operating a vehicle.
